Dorot Foundation to Spend Down Endowment by 2034

Boston, MA — Founded nearly fifty years ago, the Dorot Foundation announced today that it will spend down its endowment by 2034.

“Given the urgent challenges we face today, this is a time to fully utilize our resources,” said Jeanie Ungerleider, Dorot Foundation trustee.

Grounded in a Jewish commitment to social justice, the Dorot Foundation’s mission is to work toward a just and equitable society in which all individuals can reach their full potential. Over the course of its history, the Dorot Foundation has invested in leadership development, field-building, advocacy, direct service, and arts and culture, providing grants throughout the United States and Israel.

“We are proud of the outstanding work of our many grantees over these decades, including our long time partners the New Israel Fund, the Jewish Museum in NY, Lawyers for Children, the Religious Action Center, the Jewish Women’s Archive, among many others. More than anything else, our decision to spenddown reflects our commitment to dramatically increase our efforts to achieve impactful social change,” continued Ungerleider.

In this final chapter, Dorot will work collaboratively with long-standing and new partners to define shared goals to advance justice and equity, and fund new strategies to meet those goals.

The Dorot Fellowship in Israel (DFI), Dorot’s signature leadership development program, will also close prior to 2034. Since 1990, the DFI has offered more than 400 young North American Jewish changemakers a ten-month experience to develop their leadership skills while grappling with the complexities of contemporary Jewishness and Israeli society. The foundation will continue to invest in the DFI alumni community for as long as possible.

“Dorot’s legacy reflects the extraordinary contributions of our many partners, past and present. We are grateful to our grantees, our colleagues and thought partners, our beloved Dorot Fellows, and especially, our talented and dedicated staff.  We are confident that working together we will ensure the success of the foundation’s final chapter,” Ungerleider concluded.
