A Yale graduate, Sarah was a Dorot Fellow in 1998-99. During her fellowship year, Sarah learned at the Conservative Yeshiva and volunteered at the Israeli Foreign Ministry in the Division of World Jewish Affairs. She also volunteered at the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, where she worked with ACRI's Women's Equal Wage Campaign and their Civil Marriage and Divorce Initiative.
After her Dorot year, Sarah worked for the National Foundation of Jewish Culture, before deciding to pursue a career as a musician. Trained in opera as a child and devoted to her Sephardic heritage, Sarah performs throughout the country as "Sarah Aroeste" and in 2003, released her first album, "A La Una: In the Beginning". Sarah's music combines traditional Sephardic songs from around the Mediterranean with contemporary Western music, including rock, funk, jazz and blues.
Additionally, Sarah is on the Board of Directors of the Shefa Fund, a Philadelphia-based organization that promotes Jewish social responsibility through grant-making, investment and education. Sarah also volunteers for the New Israel Fund's New Generations Committee in New York and is an active participant in the traditional egalitarian minyan, Hadar.
