Social Change in Israel Awards

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN APPLICATION DEADLINE

A project of the Dorot Foundation in coordination with Shatil: the New Israel Fund’s Empowerment and Training Center for Social Change

The Dorot Social Change in Israel Awards will provide up to ten (10) $5,000 Awards to U.S. citizens who are enrolled at any accredited U.S. college or university to work during Summer 2008 with an Israel-based Mentor who is engaged in promoting Progressive Social Change in Israel. Up to three (3) Awards will go to graduate students; the remaining Awards will go to undergraduate students.

The Program is designed, first and foremost, to bolster the efforts of the Israel-based Mentors who are working on behalf of Progressive Social Change in Israel.

Progressive Social Change is defined here.

The Program offers significant flexibility in order to accommodate the widest possible variety of interests and to tap the resourcefulness, work ethic and passion of the applicants.

To apply, students must identify someone in Israel who is engaged in progressive social change work that the applicant finds compelling. Either on their own or with the aid of their home campus Faculty Advisor, applicants must contact the person in Israel whose work they’d like to support, convince them to act as an Israel-based Mentor and, together, develop a scope of work that furthers the Israel-based Mentor’s work.

If selected, the student’s completion of the project should, ideally, qualify for academic credit at the home campus Faculty Advisor’s institution. Upon return to their home institution and assisted by their Faculty Advisor, Award recipients must actively reflect on their experience and provide a written report to the Foundation.

The program’s overall goals are:

  • To bolster the efforts of Israel-based Mentors who are working on behalf of progressive social change in Israel
  • To foster strong connections to Israel by supporting in-depth work, study and/or exploration with a mentor in an area about which the applicant is passionate
  • To enable important work in Israel that might not otherwise be done
  • To build rich relationships between U.S. undergraduate and graduate students, Israel-based mentors and U.S.-based faculty

Please be advised that, prior to beginning the project, all Award recipients must sign a legal waiver and certify that they have reviewed the U.S. Department of State guidelines for U.S. citizens traveling to Israel – this information may be viewed here.
